BEAT: A Low-Cost, Point-of-Care, Real-Time Arrhythmia Monitor

This paper presents an advanced arrhythmia monitoring system named as BEAT that captures and displays arrhythmia as it happens in real-time on affordable smartphones. BEAT hardware wirelessly transmits a medical grade single-lead ECG data to a smartphone through Bluetooth. We have designed a smartphone app embedded with modified Pan-Tompkins algorithm to perform arrhythmia detection in real-time. The system displays ECG on the screen and generates a point-of-care (PoC) file containing logs of arrhythmia occurrences. The clever algorithm works on all affordable Android phones making arrhythmia monitoring possible in resource limited environments found in low-income and developing countries.
